Having a baby is a time of great transition. It can be one of the most precious experiences of a women’s life but it can also be a time when you need the most support.
Are you a new mum or mum-to-be in Queensland?
Yes! Why not register for our Midwife Check-in program – a free telephone based information and support service for pregnant women and new mums?
What do we do?
The Midwife Check-in offers women access to free, confidential, untimed telephone calls with a midwife regularly during pregnancy and after birth.
It gives women the opportunity to discuss any topic, such as expectations of parenthood, emotional health and wellbeing, or just to have a ‘listening ear’ at the other end of the phone.
We are also able to offer support to women who have been affected by a miscarriage, stillbirth or newborn death.
What is the Midwife Check-in?
The Midwife Check-in service provides a caring and professional midwife who calls you on a regular basis, at a time that suits you.
How does the Midwife Check-in work?
Once you sign up to the Midwife Check-in, a midwife will call you to see how things are going. If you want her to, the midwife will arrange a time to check-in with you on an ongoing basis. All check-in calls with our midwife are confidential, untimed and non-judgemental and you can chat about anything you like.
Popular topics women often check-in about include:
- what to expect
- how you are feeling
- where you can get extra help and support
- parenting; settling, crying, sleeping and feeding.

What women are saying about the Midwife Check-in
You don’t need to make an appointment - they call you and talk to you at home - you don’t have to travel anywhere or get in the car
You are called back by the same midwife each time
I like the idea of someone caring
If I had any concerns about myself or my baby - no matter how big or small - I could ask and put my mind at ease.
By the time I spoke to Kirsty, I was suffering from depression brought on by post-traumatic stress disorder following a difficult and very emotional labour. I felt such a failure at everything! Talking to Kirsty helped reassure me that I was doing an okay job! Kirsty also recommended some books in the Women’s Health library that I could borrow and have posted out to me. This was discreet and again, a fantastic service for someone who lives about six hours away from a fully stocked library.
The best feature of the Midwife Check-in is that they ring you. If it had been left up to me to ring someone, I never would have. Also, having the same midwife throughout is great. To have someone supporting you through the whole process, who gets to know you and your personality; who will know immediately if something has changed within you.
I just love the service, it is great! I tell every pregnant lady I see about it. I tell them that I have found it so wonderful and wished I had known about it sooner, as how we feel when we are pregnant might be very different to when the baby comes along.
